What is the value of a typical periodontal claim?

Periodontal disease/gum disease dental claims can be extremely high value claims and due to this fact, they are often defended.  It is important to remember that each case is valued on its own merits and each case is different.

The loss of a single back tooth is generally worth in the region of £1000.  The loss of a single front tooth is generally worth in the region of £2000.  If you take into account that most of us have 28 teeth in our mouth some claims can be worth tens of thousands of pounds taking into account the costs of remedial treatment.  Some of the highest value periodontal claims that I have dealt with were worth close to £100,000 in damages.

Periodontal claims or cases involving gum disease generally fall into two catergories;

  • The first is where the gum disease is spotted early before any tooth loss,
  • The second is when the gum disease has really taken hold and a large number of teeth may be lost.

A valuation of your dental claim will generally depend upon the prognosis for the affected teeth.  In some periodontitis claims, many teeth will be lost, in others, no teeth may be lost but the bone supporting the teeth may be compromised.

A simple valuation can be placed on each periodontal claim by totalling the number of teeth that have been lost with the total number of teeth that may be lost in the future due to the gum disease. This must be based upon expert evidence from a suitably qualified periodontist.

Awards of damages or compensation for your dental claim can vary greatly and the Judicial Studies Board (JSB) guidelines suggest that more damages may be awarded for dental negligence where the damage results in or is caused by protracted dentistry.
